When we are going through a dark and difficult time, perhaps while recovering from an injury or illness, after a break up or losing someone we love, after a sudden life change that left us bewildered - we can sometimes go into a downward spiral.
The spiral is very powerful.
It has the ability to confuse our perceptions and filter what we see, and what we think about ourselves. That causes a negative feedback loop where our own pain and fear feeds more cycles of pain and fear. But really what we need to start being happy, is to find a way to start being happy again. So there we are stuck, in an immovable place of self-deprecation. Faced with the impossible task of changing the electrical current of our cycle.
I realized today that the antidote to this is to allow yourself to experience your feelings, but to stop identifying those feelings as you.
When we say, "I am sad, I am depressed, I am angry.." We are essentially identifying ourselves as those things. We forget the person we were before the raw and vulnerable "mess" we become. We start to second guess if we ever were that person in the first place. We think maybe I'm a liar, a fraud, maybe I never had it together in the first place. Maybe this is who I am. We think this crappy, helpless, pile of poo is me now.
In changing how we narrate the overtones of the experience to ourselves, we can catalyze a new cycle - to remember who we are above what we are experiencing.
To say instead, "I am *experiencing sadness, I am *experiencing anger," and then to say, "..and it is only temporary". This places you as a third party to the cycle of pain. This breaks the psychic storms hold on us and recovers our higher identity. You remember them right? The one that's got this! The one that can use the many ups and downs to grow, to expand, to break through.
That allows us to come back into a courageous place. To realize that we are still that strong, stable, caring, and competent person were were. Don't ever forget you are not your pain, you are not what you are currently experiencing, you are conscious spirit incarnate in human form. You are here to learn, to evolve, and to map a pathway back to your greater self.
You are not the storm you are experiencing, you are the sky.
