Who we believe we are is generally considered to be our "personality." But there is a persistent myth about the immutable nature of personality. Or actually two types of myths: innate predisposition (behavior) and innate skills (abilities). We believe we are born (and subsequently presented with a mixture of nature versus nurture to screw us all up) and that predisposes us to what we label as "our personality". We say, "I can't help it, that's just my personality."
What if you could take all those colors and paint a new picture of you as a person?
CONSCIOUS LANGUAGE
First things first, what are we doing when we continually affirm something? We are running a program, we are programming ourselves to be better or worse in any given aspect of our life. I spent the better part of my life reaffirming I was clumsy. This reinforced many painful episodes of head bumping, toe banging, and knee bruising. Every time I would say, "I am just clumsy." One day I decided to change this script and tell myself, "I am graceful and coordinated." And wouldn't you know it, my ability to avoid running into benches, desks, and counter corners drastically increased.
Do a little hypothetical test with me to prove this. Think about something you know you are great at, consider what might happen if you began telling yourself you are terrible at it instead. Could that slowly erode your actual ability? What about with personality? What if instead of telling yourself you are awkward and shy, you tell yourself you are confident and friendly? By having conscious and intentional language, you can change the program you are running (this works in all areas of your life.)
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
How do you get good at something? By doing it over and over, by practicing. Do people usually start out good? No, but they get better. I am here to tell you your personality works exactly the same way as anything else. You can modify and even change your personality with practice. You can add or remove a trait just as you would add or remove a skill
WATCH is an acronym standing for:
W- words
A- actions
T- thoughts
C- character
H- habit
"Watch your thoughts. They become words. Watch your words. They become deeds. Watch your deeds. They become habits. Watch your habits. They become character."
This means habit becomes character, it is not character that becomes habit. Now try on your new personality. Be the person you want to be. The skies is not the limit, your own assumptions about yourself are. Create yourself~
